Back to the Future-like skateboard patented by Sony

Sony LogoWhile randomly browsing the web today, I stumbled on an article pointing to a patent that was filed by Sony last November for a self-powered skateboard, "which can travel in the front and back direction and which can turn by right and left wheels rotated when a rider riding on a step-board moves the position of rider's balance from the center of a vehicle base." For the safety of the user, the board will also have a vertical weight detector that will be able to detect if the person using it has lost his balance.

Since Sony's skateboarding device is still just in patent form, it's pointless to really speculate on price at this point. However, if we were to look at the Segway's roughly $4,000 to $5,000 pricetag, it wouldn't be surprising to see Sony's device hovering near that price as well, assuming it actually gets put into production. Then comes the question of demand—who would buy one?
