Environmental Hysteria is Bullshit! (Video)

In this episode of Bullshit, Penn & Teller try to prove that global warming, among other things, was created by hysterical hippies and environmentalists, thus the title of this video: "Environmental Hysteria". While we do not necessarily agree with Penn & Teller about such issues, we like the controversy and debate such a subject brings, as was previously shown in one of our other posts: Recycling is a GriGri. If you haven't looked at this last video or haven't had the time to read all the comments attached to it, I strongly suggest that you do so and see what our readers had to say about the recycling problematic. It is a fascinating thread. By posting this new Penn & Teller video, we hope that you guys will start a similar debate. Let the show begin!

Sorry, the video isn't available anymore, but if you are interested in getting the penn & teller bullshit dvd boxsets, they are available at amazon.com for a reasonable price.

  • funny...i agree with the majority of what was said....in my experience, most active environmentalists are either driven by emotion or misinformation... i'll just continue to take everything with a grain of salt, thank you.

  • I must admit that I'm not necessarily one to live...green. Personally, I rather enjoy combustion engines and some hippies just spew BS without actually knowing the facts. However, just because it may be bullshit doesn't mean we shouldn't be informed about the subject. I wrote something about Al Gore's documentary (and...Al Gore) today on my blog. I'm still rather torn about global warming...as I love cars and other awesome stuff that is the cause of...well, all the bad stuff that's happening to the world really.

  • Yeah, the best way to argue your point is to swear as much as possible, what a pile of Bullshit!

Please stop posting links to this stupid show which just seems to pander to the typical redneck American.

  • Excellent stuff. Now, I disagree with their insinuating that global warming is a hoax, but many criticisms of the environmental movement are spot on.

Much of the bile at protests is against the faceless corporation and the ubiquitous greed. A lot of people I know went to protests because they felt like they should and that it showed that they cared. But they didn't know what they were talking about.

Often, the same folks who are yelling at others to be open-minded haven't taken the time to fill their own heads with knowledge.

The real work that needs to be done involves making better choices about how to live a good lifestyle (define that as you will) without using up nearly so many resources. That's the next step and as long as environmentalism is stuck in this whiny stage it'll be stalled in smug superiority.

I disgree. Penn & Teller are notable liberal activists and to think that they would pander to their arch enemies is clearly wrong. This poster clearly disagrees with this episode's premise but his view seems limited.

As for the characterization of the "protest" they were covering, it was spot on. Sadly reminiscent of my 1960's college days in so many respects.

  • Very good video. Same thing I have been saying for years... This tree-hugger movement is all about generating donations. Just ask the CEOs how much they get paid to lead this movement. The more horrible they make it sound, the more donations they get. Not one shred of scientific evidence is put forth by them; just emotional garbage. The members of this movement just want to belong. They want to feel like they have a mission in life. Shame they are being herded by people telling big lies. One big volcanic eruption produces more pollution than all the humans combined since the beginning of the industrial revolution. Humans cannot affect the Earth, globally. Definitely locally, they can. Humans need to act responsibly with respect to their local resources, but there is no need for this hysteria.

  • i think it is important to note that this show isn't against the environment or being environmentally concerned, it is about not being ignorant and naive about the positions you take.

  • I have personally worked for the past 15 years with inventors of technolgies that can solve many of the environmental problems we face.
the answers to these problems have been available for some time now.
The real problem is the people who try to secure their job or the profits from their environmental remediation firm by over researching and trying to find out dated ways to prolong the clean-up process as long as it keeps the bucks rolling in at the big and little corporations expence. They use jargon that business people do not understand and capitalize on that lack of understanding. When you can secure grants, billable hours and so on by not proving a solution but by creating more questions with out true merit to prolong the clean-up yo then have the real environmental problems. If you need further proof just look at Onondaga Lake. More money has been spent on research and the solution offered is a misguided approach that will cost millions if not billions of dollars to that so called big bad corporation and their share holders that want to do the right thing but cant get a strait answer from their consultants.to the tune of a starting budget of $450,000,000.00 they want to suck muck and truck contaminates only to put the contaminates back in the ground in a temporary location 2.5 miles away.Mother nature has already done more to cure the lake then anyone person or organization to seal the contaminates in place. But rather than help mother nature do her work the engineers want to disturb her work and make matters worst. The common theme is at least they are trying to do something even if it is the wrong thing to do.Do not be fooled anymore wake up and seek the truth and not the spin and we will have a better environment to enjoy.

  • I think that the Bullshit show is really great at getting it's point across.

They never go into a story with closed minds and specific thoughts - they always approach the subject trying to prove it one way or the other, using data given to them by the people they interview.

The REALLY sad thing is that the people that they talk to always end up proving themselves wrong.

How can so many people be so "into" whatever topic they are talking about, and know so little about it?

  • Global warming is a scam and it has been proven to be a political theory and not a scientific one.

It does not even follow the scientific method and I have peer reviewed many of the works, and found flaws and statistical errors in them.

  • As a scientist who has worked in planetary computer modeling I know that the scientific evidence just doesn't support the theory that mankind is making any significant (or lasting)contribution to global warming or cooling; the sun's output fluctuates over the centuries. I can also see that most "evidence" used to contribute to the hysteria is mischaracterized. Click on my name-link for an example explanation of how the data are distorted in presentation.
