Microsoft Reveals New Vista and Office 2007 Packaging

It looks like some people at Microsoft have been hard at work designing new packages for their software.

Nice, colorful and sexy. I like them. Here's a quote from the official Vista blog giving more details about these new product boxes.

Designed to be user-friendly, the new packaging is a small, hard, plastic container that's designed to protect the software inside for life-long use. It provides a convenient and attractive place for you to permanently store both discs and documentation. The new design will provide the strength, dimensional stability and impact resistance required when packaging software today. Our plan is to extend this packaging style to other Microsoft products after the launch of Windows Vista and 2007 Office system (Source: Windows Vista Blog)

There's only one part about this quote that bugs me: "the new packaging is a small, hard, plastic container that's designed to protect the software inside for life-long use". For LIFE-LONG USE? Can you imagine anyone still using vista in 50 years? Why would Microsoft offer something like this when everyone knows that their products are going to be obsolete in 3 to 5 years? This is completely ridiculous. What are your thoughts on this?

  • I thought the same thing, before I got to your end comment. "Life Long Use"? For whose life, my pet cricket?

  • Considering that Microsoft will only allow you to activate Vista twice with the same license key, why are they bothering with "long life use" of the media?

  • Does Apple actually do everything better than MS? With the beating Apple got from Greenpeace, MS could have taken a poke at them with nice sturdy 100% recycled packaging. All it has to hold is a single DVD and a little hologram sticker.
