Spyware and adware have recently emerged as the more pervasive and insidious threats than the worms or viruses, the previous sources of chaos and ruin on the Internet highways. Without some kind of software protection in place the days where you could browse the internet safely without too much risk have now long gone.   • Not bad except the author makes no software recommendations to help people out. There is a lot of malware designed to look like anti-malware.

    SpywareBlaster (spyware innoculator);
    Spybot Search and Destroy (spyware scanning plus innoculation);
    AdAwareSE (spyware scanner).

    Oh, and use Firefox for web surfing of course. :)
