Introducing: the British Geekette

Hi everyone, my name is Caroline and I'm the latest recruit to the [GaS] fold.

A little over a week ago Kiltak extended me the great compliment of asking if I would like to join the [GaS] team. Of course I said yes. I'd be a fool not to be part of such a great site.

My background is a long and winding road...

Back in the early 90's I studied Industrial Design at university, specialising specifically in Product Design. After completing a three year, pretty intensive, course at a vocational uni the realisation that my initial youthful
change-the-world idealism didn't translate all that well in the real world hit me like a lightening bolt.

I briefly considered further education in the form of a Journalism course. With every intention of following a career into Design Journalism.

Then I looked at my bank balance.

So after uni - and via a small detour (
let's not go there) - I stumbled into Telecommunications. And as career moves go it couldn't have worked out better.

I've been in this industry for 9 years now and have been fortunate to have experienced its many facets first hand. I consider myself an all-rounder having worked in a broad spectrum of telecoms related areas.

Then four years ago I fulfilled a long standing desire to move into IT.

... cornering the IT Manager in the pub, after just the right amount of beer, and turning on my persuasiveness. What can I say? Life really is all about timing...)

Initially I became a Systems Architect as part of the development team. Then after a couple of years doing that I was asked if I wanted to take over a newly vacant position in the Systems Support team.

So for the past couple of years I've filled my working days with the varied combination of DBA, SysAdmin, Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence.

My days are busy, believe me.

As for my [GaS] contributions... well... expect them to be varied. Lots of things pique my interest on a variety of subjects every day. I hope I can employ my particular brand of verbosity for all to enjoy.

Just so you know, Caroline
is my real name. When I first started blogging anonymity never even occurred to me. Now it's a bit late to do anything about it. Ahh, the beauty of hindsight.

Oh yes, and also... I'm English, living and working in the vast metropolis that is London.
