The Nintendo Revolution Has a New Name : Wii

The Nintendo Revolution has now a new name, and it's not a pretty one. From now on, the console shall be named the Nintendo Wii (Weeeeeeeeeeee!). Personally, I think that the name "Revolution" sounded much better. I can't understand what entered the mind of Nintendo's marketing team when they decided to give the console such a stupid name. Here is a little media presentation introducing Revolution's new name.

  • Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee? WII? WTF!

  • The guys at 4cr've got it right, this is EXCACTLY the same feeling and response as when the controller was released (now nicknamed the wiimote btw :D)

Once E3 is over the name scandle will be all but forgotten I suspect, at least Nintendo had the foresight to announce the name now instead of ruining their presentations at the expo by announcing it then.

Anyway, wii'll all get used to the name eventually, wii might even start dropping in the spelling at grammatically incorrect times to look 1337...

  • wii? It sounds like half of what a child says when they have to urinate. Mom, I gotta go wee wee. LOL. What a stupid name.

  • One of my friends said "I can just see the Nintendo PR people hunting frantically for an open domain name that they could use for their spiffy new name."

    - "How 'bout Waa..."
    - "Taken"
    - "Crap! How 'bout Woo..."
    - "Also taken"
    - "Bloody @%#$@. Fine, how 'bout [insert random noise here]

    (several hours later)

    - "Hey! We could use Wii..."

In all seriousness though, this is an odd move on Nintendo's part. The "Revolution" brand seemed to be attracting a lot of attention, and had a good, slick, "future-y" feel to it. "Wii" just sounds small and childish.

Nintendo probably got sued by some company somewhere for trademark infringement or something and decided to re-brand the new system.

  • Can you say free publicity. Many, many people are talking/typing about it. More attention than what you could get from a hundred commercials.
