DVD is dead, but what's coming next?

Only a few years after being released, it seems that the DVD technology is already dead.. At least that's what the tech. industry seems to agree about. Two warring factions each believe their product should become the standard : HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. I dearly hope that HD-DVD wins the race! The HD-DVD manufacturing process is similar to the existing DVD one, so the new discs should be inexpensive and quick to produce. I also heard that the first HD-DVD players will be coming out at a suggested retail price of 450$, while their Sony counterpart will be priced at 1800$ Ridiculous isn't it?

This reminds me of the BETA vs. VHS war that was being fought back in the early 80.

  • This definitely reminds me of BETA vs. VHS as well. And of course, the better format (whichever it may be) won't necessarily win. I for one am doing what I can to get away from physical media. With hard drive storage being as cheap as it is, I think sticking to open codecs and encoding standards stored on large hard drives provides a much more agile solution in the long-term.
